Why I’m Embracing Minimal Makeup

One of my own little personal goals for 2018 is to start embracing minimal makeup. After spending a good week at home for Christmas it hit me that I really don’t need to spend so much time getting ready if I use the right products. By day 3 I was slowly getting lazier with the makeup application and by day 7 well it was pretty much non existent – yet I felt totally okay with this. As soon as I was ready to head outside and face the world again I decided that less really is more.

This new approach to how I look with and without makeup all came down to how much time I actually spend getting ready each morning when I could be making the most of the time doing something else or even better, sleeping. On average I spend around 40 minutes every day going through my skincare routine, applying makeup and getting ready. When I add this up over the week, month or even the year (who sang that in Friends theme tune?) it works out that I spent roughly 242 hours getting ready. Don’t even get me started on getting un-ready too!

I’ve worked out that I only really need 3 products in order to feel put together and ready to leave the house still feeling completely like myself. I rely on a natural looking, glowing base with a medium coverage to blur imperfections and give me a confidence boost. I’ve never had great skin but I feel like a good skincare routine is really the key to embracing minimal makeup and wearing a more skin-like base. I tend to reach for either the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, Bourjois Healthy Mix, Nars Sheer Glow or Lancome Teint Idole Foundation. All of these are staples in my collection and I usually have them on rotation depending on what my skin actually requires.

I never feel awake until I have coated my lashes in my favourite mascara. Seeing as I’m naturally quite fair skinned my lashes look non-existent until I have combed through Maybelline’s Lash Sensational. No matter how many new formulas of mascara I try I always come back to this one for lengthened, separated and ultra black lashes that stay perfectly curled all day.

Finally, a nourishing, semi-matte lipstick is my absolute must have. I never feel like myself until I have applied a pop of colour on my lips and it instantly makes me feel complete. My all time favourite shade is the Nars Audacious Lipstick in Anita. This does wonders for a minimal makeup look – instantly brightening the complexion all whilst making me feel great. When it comes to my everyday lipstick I can’t imagine not applying MAC’s Whirl Lipliner with Rimmel’s Kate Moss Lasting Finishing Lipstick in ’03’. It’s my all time signature lip duo and I’m obsessed. For an even quicker application on the go, the Nars Velvet Lip Glide in ‘Bound’ is the perfect mauve, nude.

What are your minimal makeup must haves?

  • I’m kind of forced to go for a minimal makeup look on a day to day basis, just because I’m so rubbish at getting up in the mornings… Mascara makes the biggest difference when it comes to minimal makeup looks – I find it’s the thing that instantly brings my face to life and makes me feel a bit more put together!

  • I love minimal make up. It takes so much less time, AND it’s easier to transport. Oh, and it’s way better for the environment. All fantastic reasons!

It’s so easy to go over board with coverage to try and hide imperfections but then your skin looks like a mask. I’m trying to apply a lighter base and conceal only where need.

  • I am totally in love with this post! I am SO over spending countless hours getting ready. I actually put the bulk of my makeup in a storage bin and only kept a handful of products out on my vanity. Without all of the options, I found I could breeze through my routine! 🙂

  • This is my go to makeup look as well! Foundation, mascara and something on my lips. Sometimes I put some highlighter on my cheeks if I want a glowy look. My mascara of choice is definitely Maybelline’s Lash Sensational, it’s so good! xx

  • The Lash Sensational is the next mascara on my list to try. I’m just trying to use up some of the ones I have before purchasing any new ones! The Giorgio Armani foundation has so many great reviews so I’d love to try it one day!

  • In the past year I actually tried to get more into a full-face-but-not-really-a-full-face of makeup.
What I mean by that incredibly weird collocation is having the luminous base and everything look kind of natural, but still adding some colour to the eyes and definition to the face.
It was a kind of rebellion against all of the concealer-brows-mascara that I have spent my life wearing even though I love colourful looks lol
